EVENT
Practicing the Psalms
WHEN: After worship on four Sundays: 11:15am-12:15pm, February 25, March 3,10, & 17.
WHERE: Pilgrim House Chapel
WHAT: Lenten Experiential Gatherings: Spiritual practices for praying the Psalms.
Both Judaism and Christianity hold the Psalms as a community song book, a devotional prayerbook and a guide to faith. In the New Testament we meet Jesus, who quotes from the Psalms more than any other book in Jewish Scripture. Spiritual leaders of the 20th Century, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and C.S. Lewis, daily meditated on the Psalms. What might it look like to engage with the Psalms more directly, through spiritual practices passed down through the ages?
Each session will include an introduction to a particular spiritual practice, time practicing together, and an opportunity to reflect on the experience and how it might enrich our spiritual lives. We will explore memory, silence, a rosary, and other ways to connect with and pray the Psalms. We will practice moving from head to heart – not bypassing the mind but integrating mind and heart – to unite our full inner lives as whole human beings in prayer.
