2024 Adams Society Annual Speaker: "Swearing, Seriously.", a talk by Dr. Douglas Bennett
Adams Society members will be celebrated after the worship service Sunday, April 28, with an address by Dr. Douglas Bennett, “Swearing, Seriously.” His talk will focus on the swearing of oaths, what we’re doing when we do (or don’t) do that, and what it means to promise to tell the truth.
Douglas Bennett is President Emeritus at Earlham College, having served from 1997 to 2011. Previously he had appointments at Temple University, Reed College and the American Council of Learned Societies. He has a B.A. from Haverford College, a Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University, and an Honorary degree from Indiana University.
In retirement, he regularly teaches courses in Maine’s senior college network. Classes available to area citizens have included “Promoting the Common Welfare,” “A Republic, If You Can Keep It,” “The Founding and Refounding of the United States of America,” and “The Pursuit of Equality.”
He is married to Ellen Trout Bennett and has two sons and two granddaughters. A Quaker, he is a member of Durham Friends Meeting and lives in Topsham. Doug and Ellen live in an 18th Century house originally built by Samuel Thompson, a pivotal Mainer in the American Revolution.
All are welcome to attend.
