Cantata Sunday Worship
Join us in the Sanctuary for a service of worship with preaching, prayer, music. All are welcome!
On this special Sunday, our Adult Choir will give their cantata presentation of Creator of the Stars of Night, which is a world premiere of Delmar Small’s composition. Delmar is a native of Litchfield, Maine and a graduate of Bates College where he studied organ and German. Other compositions include “As It Began to Dawn,” an Easter oratorio premiered by the Bowdoin Chorus in 2013; a musical co-authored with Margaret Ann Harvey: “Rapunzel;” and “Hook, Line & Sinker,” a musical that premiered at Bowdoin College in 2022. He was a composer-in-residence at the National Puppetry Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in 2019. Since 2002, he has been an administrator in the Bowdoin College Music Department. He composed Creator of the Stars of Night as a gift to the choir of First Parish Church in celebration of years of collaboration together. Delmar makes the old new in this seven-movement cantata setting of the Latin hymn tune that dates back to the 6th, 7th, and 9th centuries with a fresh compositional perspective, interesting rhythms, and often romantic harmonies. This work features the Adult Choir; Jesse Myers-Wakeman, tenor soloist; John D. Adams, bass soloist; Linda Nagy-Johnston, violin; Julia Eiten, viola; Karen Jung, cello; Billie Jo Brito, English horn; and Virginia Flanagan, harp. Enrich your Advent spiritual journey by joining us for this special premiere offering of Creator of the Stars of Night.
Nursery youth start in their classroom downstairs at Pilgrim House (9 Cleaveland St.), and all other Church School youth start their Sundays in the Sanctuary and walk over to Pilgrim House together.
