Most people have doubts about their faith or parts of it at some point. Brian McLaren’s new book approaches this subject in a way that illuminates a broader look at Christianity, our beliefs, and the patterns that oftentimes develop as we question and deepen our faith as he encourages the reader to do some beneficial self-reflection. In a very readable and relatable book, he also provides an overview of the development of faith comparing different religious groups with others and the many ways that we can challenge and enrich our belief in God through our doubts. His four stages of faith development are thought-provoking: Simplicity, Complexity, Perplexity and Harmony. For those of you who are fans of Richard Rohr, Brian McLaren is a former pastor, an author who has written several noteworthy books and is Dean of the Faculty and on the faculty at Richard Rohr’s Centre for Action and Contemplation. Nicholas Kristof, NY Times columnist and political commentator, called Brian’s book, The Great Spiritual Migration, “Provocation and Powerful.” Richard Rohr writes, “Anything written by Brian McLaren is always filled with insight, courage, and creative theology, refining the meaning of orthodoxy in our time.”
