Stained Glass Windows Restoration Project Update!

Willet Hauser, Associated Crafts, (WH/AC) from Winona, MN (just southeast of Minneapolis) will be onsite starting the week of 13 May to complete installation work on nearly $146,000 in restoration and reconditioning contracts from 2022-2024 for our Stained Glass Windows (SGWs). They will also extract two unnamed smaller side windows from the Transept on the Bowdoin side for restoration work for an additional $70,000 contract. They expect to be here for up to 4 weeks.

After this work we will have two unnamed windows remaining to be restored, these would be the two on each side of the Transept on the Vestry side. It has taken some 20+ years to reach this point. The first window to undergo restoration was the crown jewel Adams-Chamberlain window at the front of the Sanctuary in 2003-2004 as part of the major Tower Restoration Project. Two other named windows were restored in 2012. In 2020 we signed a major 3-year contract that was completed in 2022 which restored or reconditioned some 60 windows around the Vestry and Morrell Room (40 full factory restorations and 20 in-frame reconditioned). The Vestry and Morrel Room windows had not been serviced in nearly 100 years. Also, all the large windows will be receiving a new 20-year life bronzed aluminum storm window covering like the included photo example. The expected total cost for the finished project — targeted for completion in 2026-2027 — is just under $500,000.

None of the above would have been possible within this 20-year timeline without the bequest from the families of Clark, Barry, Knowles, and a major donation from Bowdoin College all totaling nearly $192,000.
